How can I know, when schools of smaller baitfish from the open water(sea) to lighted pier ?

I want to catch ribbonfish, so let me know in detail.

don't know if this will help.BUT when i fish near a dam on the river i can tell if there is a large # of baitfish by the number of gulls/fish eating birds hanging around the area.the more gulls/birds there are the more fish, bait or otherwise, there are.should work for you too.

What Is The Best Baitfish For Offshore Fishing?

I Would Really Like to Know Some Breed of Fish That You Can Catch Using A Seine Net To Catch Some Big Fish Offshore. Shrimp Is Awesome But Is there Any other breed that works just a well?

minnows and worms and crab and squid that is good for fresh and saltwater

How many tons of baitfish, ie, anchovies, sardines, etc, are removed from the ocean to be used as fertilizer?

Well, I work for a wholesale grower and we use only synthetically produced time-release fertilizer. So in my case the answer would be: none. In fact, most of todays farmers don't use actual fish byproducts. I have a neighboring family that is Korean and they do put a dead fish under each plant that goes in the ground... but this is not common American practice.

what kind of baitfish have the largest population in the neches river for bass?

Minnows or shad most likely. Bass always seem to be by shad. Good luck fishin'!

how to keep shad baitfish alive?

we fish with shad & have some left over occasionally so we put them in our aeriated bait tank in hopes of keeping them for later on. it never fails they die within a few hours. we've even tried putting them in our baitfish trap in the lake but they all died in there also. anyone have any ideas why this happens? or what we could do to keep them alive? there must be some way to do because if not how could the bait shops sell them?

Yes there is a way.I have had this problem before and i told a biologist friend of mine about this and he come up with something...First you need a container thats smooth and has round edges inside it.NO corners... and a bilge pump to pump the water around inside and aerator pump to oxygenate the water and epson salt..to take away the amonia from the fish..Shad dies because they put of amonia and it burns there own gills.....For a container I like the orange igloo water cooler ..you can drill it and silicone it when adding your pumps and hoses. and use a plastic minnow net or sand flea net to get them out of the container..

baitfish stuck me with fin possibly stickleback, help me identify?

I live in Charlotte Harbor Florida and last week I was getting bait and there was a different fish in with my greenbacks at the time I kind of wondered if it was a baby mackerel. When I picked it up one of its fins stuck my finger and it was painful kind of like getting catfish slime into a cut, and it lasted for about 15-20 minutes. Today I was getting bait at the same spot and I noticed I had another one stuck in the net, and I decided to get revenga, I grabbed the net just above the fish, and slammed him against the side of the boat a couple of times so that I could push him out without getting stuck, ironically it bounced, and hit one of my fingers ouch. But this time it wasn't near as painful, but still more painful than being stuck by a pinfish or other fish with spines. I tried to find something that looks like it on yahoo, and the closest thing I found is a sticklefish, I am pretty sure that is what it was, but I didn't see anything about them being painful when they stick you

There aren't any native sticklebacks that are supposed to range that far south, but I guess it's possible that some could have been released. They do have a painful dorsal ray, but I'm not aware of any toxins such as you would get from a catfish, and that sounds more like what you encountered.

One fish that might be more likely would be tadpole madtom (a type of catfish),and these are found in Florida, but they have a different appearance - they're broader than a stickleback would be.

A photo could have helped with identification, but it probably wasn't among your priorities at the moment.

Is there any more description you could add that may help (length, color, environment where found, single or double doral fins, flattened side-to side, etc.)?

Fishing Tips For Catfish

Please note that this article includes excerpts from the well known expert fisherman Dick Sternberg, from his great book: Fishing With Live Bait. So you know the catfish fishing tips are sound.

With jaws nearly a foot wide, a big flathead catfish eats fish that most anglers would be happy to catch. Some trotline fishermen use carp and other baitfish weighing up to 2 pounds.

Flatheads prefer live fish. Channel and blue-cats also bite on live baitfish, but most are caught on dead fish or fish chunks.

When fishing for large catfish, many anglers use a Wolf River rig to keep the bait fluttering off bottom. For smaller catfish, an egg sinker rig or a sliding Wolf River rig may work better.

Trotlines and limblines, while considered commercial gear in some states, are commonly used on large rivers and reservoirs. A trotline, or setline, consists of a dozen or more hooks. A limbline has only a single hook. It is tied to an overhanging branch so the baitfish dangles in the water. Both types of lines are set one day and picked up the next.

How to Use a Wolf River Rig:

Step #1
Thread a 24-inch leader of 15-pound mono through the eye of a bait needle.
Step #2
Push the line into the mouth and out the vent of a 5 - 7-inch shad.
Step #3
Tie on a 1/0 to 3/0 treble hook.
Step #4
Tie a three-way swivel to 20-pound monofilament.
Step #5
Attach the baited leader and a 10-inch dropper of 12-pound mono tied to a 3 - 4-ounce pyramid sinker.
Step #6
Cast into tailwaters where catfish hide among the rocks. This rig works well on rocky bottoms. If the sinker snags, its lighter line will break first so you can salvage the rest of the rig.
