Shaky Head Worm: How and when do you fish it? Small and Largemouth...?

Hook type? Water type? Colors and suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

A shakey head rig is a finesse tactic best used when the bass are inactive, or you have picked off all the active fish using search baits such as spinnerbaits and crankbaits.

To rig a shakey head worm you need only two things. I use and prefer a ball head jig, but other jigs such as a "spot remover" jig or any of your basic stand-up jig heads work great. And two, you need soft plastic worms that have some amount of boyancy to them. I prefer the Strike King 3X worms due to how well they float. The tail on the 3X worm jumps and jives as you twitch it across the bottom. Another type of floating worm would be the Zoom trick worms.

Rigging a worm shakey head style is very similar to texas rigging a plastic worm. You are just using a jig instead of a wide gap hook. Push the point of the hook down into the top of the head and push it out of the bottom of the worm approximatly half an inch from the head of the worm. Then you pull the head of the worm over the barb of the jigs collar untill the head of the worm is flush with the head of the jig. If you are using a 3X worm and a ball head jig, it is a little tricky. Some anglers use super glue to glue the worms head to the head of the jig so that it doesn't slide around.

Then you take the worm and push the hook through it so that the point goes through the top of the worm. Then skin hook the point to make it weedless.

You can fish the shakey head anywhere you would fish any other jig. The ball head jig is one of my top 3 favorites because it works very well in rocky cover. When you fish the rig, the tail should stick up and jiggle while you dance the rig back to you. The best way to fish it is to find a spot that you know has fish, cast it out and work it back on the bottom by hoping it a few inches at a time. The goal is to make it look like a creature working over the bottom in search of food, stoping here and there to eat. When I fish the rig I try to "sneak" it back to the boat so that it looks as real as possible.

Color is totally dependant on the conditions of the water when you get to the lake. If the water is muddy I go with dark colors. If the water is clear try natural colors, and if the water is stained I like to mix it up between bright colors such as chartruese, mentholate, and bubble gum and dark colors such as black with blue flakes, green pumpkin, and watermelon seed.

Have fun and tight lines!

worm colors that r best to use in murky deep water on a "shaky head" (live in south fl.)??
bass fishing

Rob K & Joe get my vote! (Nice answer guys!)

I am a native Floridian.

Dark, murky, water??? Colors for worms??

1. Red shad/Green flake, Black/Blue tail, Junebug, Crawdad, Methiolate, Black/Blue fleck, Tequila shad, Etc.

2. Make sure to use a worm with an "active" tail in murky water. 8" paddle-tail worms are VERY popular in Fla.

Senko's and "deadstick" type worms don't produce as much as "hyper-tails", (like a good 'ole Berkley Powerworm), in muddy/murky water because the fish have no "vibration" to zero-in on, (Muddy-water Bass use their "lateral-line" and "nose" more than clear water fish!).

6-10" worms in ANY darker color should be OK as long as it has a "curly-tail" or "paddle-tail" design. (Make sure to juice your worms up with some type of attractant.)

However, in my opinion, you should be fishing 1/4-1/2 OZ Spinnerbaits with gold-colored double-willow blades. Spinnerbaits & wide wobble Cranks are VERY productive in Stained-Muddy water.

Make sure to "feather" your cast when S-bait fishing and cast as close to structure as humanly possible. (Feather- A slang term for casting a Spinnerbait in such a way that it makes minimal "splash" when it hits the water.)

Hope this helps ya? Good luck!

my dog has tape worms and gave him medicine and is shaky and nauseated are these normal signs?

Read the back and see if it is a side effect. If it is not, take him to the vet imediatly, he could be having an alergic reaction and could be in trouble. Even if it is on the back, take him in as soon as you can to make sure he is okay. Hurry!

what is the best bait for small mouth bass?

i've tried shaky worms,lizards,spinner bait,and sinkos

If you are fishing in a river, you might want to cast a top-water chugger toward some type of rocky structure, no matter what size the structure is. Try chugging it next to current breaks and at tail-outs of pools. Don't let the whole dawn/dusk thing dissuede you, just get out there and toss it around at whatever time you might be on the water.
If you are fishing in some type of lake or reservoir, try a crawfish or motor oil colored tube bait and work it next to underwater structure. Again, any structure could hold bass, but, remember that even the best structure may not have bass when you are fishing it. Don't write that spot off ...fish it later in your fishing trip if possible.
Never dismiss "used" water as fishless water. Fish move throughout their territory as conditions dictate. A fishless spot in the morning could be (and often is) where they congregate in the afternoon or evening. Hope this helps, but by just asking the question, I know you are dedicated to catching more fish . Good Luck and Good Fishin'

Shaky Head Finesse Worm Bass Fishing!

There was a time when southern anglers made fun of the finesse tactics that west coast fishermen used for catching bass. Light line, small baits and spinning rods were for sissies, scoffed the boys back east.

[AD] var wau_iab = "25"

But once western anglers began winning big time bass tournaments on southern impoundments, attitudes changed. Today, you'll find at least one spinning outfit rigged with light line in nearly every Elite Angler's rod box.

Why? Because anglers have discovered that downsizing tackle can be a necessity on waters that get abundant fishing pressure — and most popular bass lakes do. Fish that have been caught and released frequently get wise and wary quickly when they're being bombarded by an array of big, brash baits fished on heavy line.

No one knows that better than anglers on the Bassmaster Tournament Trail, where one of the hottest finesse techniques employed on last year's circuit accounted for a ton of bass.

And the technique didn't come from California, but rather the heart of Alabama. It's called shaky head fishing, a tactic originally developed for tricking cantankerous spotted bass into striking, yet one that has proven equally deadly on fussy largemouth and smallmouth bass.

Shaky Head fishing was a guarded secret among touring pros — that is until Kevin VanDam won the Elite 50 tournament on Lake Lewisville, Tex. and shattered the lake record with a giant 11-pound, 13-ounce largemouth.

VanDam used the technique in his next three victories, but he wasn't alone. It's become a go-to technique for a number of pros that say it works anywhere, anytime. Guys like Jeremy Starks of West Virginia and Bink Desaro of Idaho are shaky head aficionados who have seen the technique save the day on more than one occasion. Whereas Shaky Head fishing is best suited for rocky bottoms, sandy flats or around sparse grass beds, it can be fished around the edges of thicker cover and in water from 1 to 40 feet deep.
