Fly Fishing Reel

How much must one spend to get a quality saltwater fly fishing reel?

I need a resonably priced reel for chasing Tarpon, Snook, and Bonefish. Brand names would be appreciated.

Okuma makes a decent reel for saltwater applications and you could match that up with decent saltwater rod as well. I would get an 8wt or a 9wt. Go to FAOL or outdoorbest.zerofrorums - flyfishing section and search archived posts and ask some questions. I would not target tarpon with anything less than a 10wt rod and reel with a good line. The 8wt or 9wt will cross between salt and freshwater fishing if you want to target peacock bass in Florida or largemouth basss as well. Based on your budget, say $250 look at Cabelas and Bass Pro combos for 8wt and 9wt. Good luck

Fly Fishing Reel Proper Line Threading?

I ran a cross a site that appeared to show the fly line should pass underneath (on the outside) of the line protector bar on the botom of the reel. I have always threaded my line so that it passes "inside" the bottom line protector as that seems to provide a more direct path to the first guide on the rod. So, should I feed my fly line "inside" the line protector bar, or on the "outside" of the line protector bar on the fly reel? Thanks for any help.

you have got it right. that is the only way the drag system will work properly and running it around the bottom wil cause abrasion to your fly-line and take years out of it's life.

can i use a fly fishing reel for course fishing?

could i use a flyfishing reel for course fishing, what is the difference between a fly fishing reel and a centre pin reel?

No, a fly reel is for fly fishing. If you prefer to use this kind of reel instead of a fixed spool reel for course fishing, then you need to get yourself a centre pin reel. Centre pin reels are great for float fishing, and in particular trotting on fast moving waters. Check out the Australian made reels Alvey, most of their reels are for sea fishing, however they do have a few that are for general purpose use also, i.e. course fishing. They are generally made from Bakelite and are very reasonably priced, see them at www.sharnbrooktackle.com and search for centre pin reels, the cheapest is the Alvey 40B-L - Beginners Reel for about £21 + vat, and although it is described as a beginners reel, it is also ideal for the experienced casual angler. Centre pin reels can be very expensive, so I would definitely recommend Alvey as they are very reasonably priced, well made and built to last.

China has a picture of one, that is on top of the rod. About, 600 b.c.. Egypt has one that is about 1,200 b.c.. It had five flies tied to his fishing-rod. Forget the net, just go to the Library and look up, "The Complete book of fly fishing" est. 1987

What kind of fly fishing reel should i buy.?

If you're new to fly fishing I suggest buying a cheap rig at Walmart or some other discount store. This way you can get the feel for fly fishing without incurring large costs.

Fly Fishing Reels - Know Your Facts

by Chipper Blakey

fly-fishing-reelThe most important piece of equipment to fly fishermen is the fly fishing reel. There are many different kinds of reels as well as there are different kinds of rods for different situations. It is not necessary to lay down a bunch of money for a new reel, although you can if you would like. A basic no frills fly reel will do in just about any situation, and if you do your homework and choose wisely, you will not have a need to replace it for many years.

Most trout fishermen strip their fly line manually rather than using the handle. Most fishermen will tell you that it is quicker to do it by hand, and you get more of a feel for the placement of your lure by keeping the line in your hand.

Depending on the situation that you are in, sometimes it is better to reel the line in manually and sometimes it is preferable to use the handle. When following a large fish most people prefer to use the handle for better control. Another situation to use the handle is when you have thick foliage and there is a chance of getting your line caught. If you are moving around in the water a lot, using the handle is a good idea.

Fishermen who reel their line in the most frequent are salmon fishermen. The reason of this is because more often than not, salmon fishermen will be in the water fishing. Trout reels are usually smaller than salmon reels, and are normally not as efficient in reeling line in as salmon reels are.

Technology is improving by leaps and bounds due to research companies like Sage in the fly fishing industry. Also fly fishing equipment is getting lighter with the use of graphite. A lot of your veteran fly fishermen prefer the older reels with a bit of weight in them to maintain the balance that they are familiar with.
