Shark Fishing Reel

Whats a good spinning reel combo for shark fishing?

I'm looking for a good spinning reel combo for shark fishing in the St. Pete Beach, FL area. The fishing would be from beach or pier. What reel and rod would you recommend? Any suggestions on line also? I definitely am looking for a reel that can hold alot of line. I'm also looking for any advice on rig set up as well. Any help would be deeply appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I've got some experience shark fishing with a spinning reel.
My personal set-up is a heavy class ugly stik rod with the largest Penn captiva live-liner they make (CLL6000) spooled with 65lb PowerPro and i'll tell you, i've pushed that reel to the edge, and got lucky. It handled beautifully, but i'll be upgrading to the Penn Slammer Live Liner (760L) here shortly, just to be safe.

The reason I like the Live Liners, is because I can heave out a chunk of bluefish on a circle hook, engage the secondary drag and wait for that fish to take it while having the bail closed and ready. Then when he does take it, and I know he's got it in his mouth, i'll flip the switch over to the preset primary drag, and he sets the hook on himself!

A medium weight ugly stik tiger rod ($60), a Penn slammer Live-Liner 760L ($100-$170 on ebay) spooled with 65lb PowerPro, a 7' 80lb steel leader with a 6/0-10/0 wide-gap circle hook and depending on tide/current, the appropriate weight, and you'll be set for anything in the bay area. Remember, your fishing off a pier, or beach in Tampa Bay, you aren't targeting Jaws here. Just the occasional black tip or, if your lucky, a monster lemon or bull!

You obviously don't have to go with the equpiment I say, im just sharing what I feel will work for your area, and i've found works for me. But with what i've listed above, look to spend around $250, (which isn't too bad for a whole ready to fish set-up; rod, reel, line, tackle, etc...) more or less depending if you find it cheaper online, etc.

What is a good reel for shark fishing from the surf in the outer banks?

White size and brand? Should i go with bait casting or spinning gear? Thanks!

I use both casting, and spinning, and have caught sharks on both ...I have two 12 foot Tica rods, heavy action rated for 20 to 40 lb test, and 3 to 8 ounces....They are matched with Okuma TP-80 reels, with 280 yards of 25 lb test....I have fought some big fish with them from the surf, and landed some, lost some...They do have the backbone, and line capacity to handle larger fish....I have two Diawa North Coast casting rods, 11 feet, rated 30 to 40 lb line, and 7-15 ounce lures....One has an Ambassador 7000C, the other an Ambassador 9000C.....both spooled with 30 lb test....They are all great big fish outfits, and I do not target sharks, but they find my Drum rigs, and sometimes we do battle...They are ample gear for almost anything I encounter, but there are critters in the ocean that will not come to the beach.....Bull Sharks are common along the "banks' from Rodanthe to Hatteras Inlet, and many are 300 lbs or larger...They come very close at night, and actually get into sloughs right next to the beach....The combos I described are about as heavy as I can cast and handle from the beach, but they work well on everything I have encountered.....

shark fishing rod/reel?

what is a good shark fishing rod/reel set up thats under $1500.
i plan on catching big hammerheads big tigers and other large sharks

For the best "fight" and fun I'd look hard at the Shimano Tiagra line of reels, (Ti30A or Ti20A), and a decent Stand-up rod.

Penn International's are great but (in my honest opinion) the gearing on a Tiagra are better.

You COULD afford the Accurate Platinum Series but I think it may be overkill.

Depends.

What size Shark do you plan on catching?

If your going for the "big boys" (500-1500+ LB's) then your gonna need an Accurate, Penn International, or Shimano Tiagra, (period).

If you plan on staying within the 200-300LB realm, for shear fun, look hard at the Tiagra. I've sold these and fished with these reels and they are TOP Notch.

Hope this helps ya? Good luck in your hunt for an awesome outfit!

what's the best rod and reel combo for shark fishing?

Im just starting to fish for shark and I was curious what was the best gear for a reletively cheap price.
im just starting to fish for shark and i was wondering what was the best rod and reel combo for a reletively cheap price. Oh yea im fishing from the beach.

A reel that's small enough to cast, but big enough to hold enough heavy line to haul in a big one. I don't know the size of the sharks you're after, but offhand I'd recommend something on the order of a Penn 113, maybe the wide version if you need more capacity, with 50-60 pound line. Then you need a rod long enough to cast, but not so long that it'll kill you to pull hard with it -- probably a 9-footer rated for 50 pound line.

If you're fishing off a boat, the same size reel would do, but on a shorter rod (6 feet or so).

What is a good rod and reel to get at wallmart for shark fishing?

Baitcasting or spincasting would be fine Got around hundred dollars

Bump your bucks a bit and you can get a 113h combo for $159 more or less and this will be good for most average shark fishing.
Bass pro,Walmart or your local tackle dealer would be your best option for service and the knowledge!
