Hi! I want to buy a good quality reel for surf fishing, using a 20lb test line of mono, and 3 to 5 oz lead weight, I'm thinking about a conventional reel less than $200.00. The reason is because the conventional reel holds more line (about 400yds of 25lb) than the spinning reel, any suggestions? I was thinking about this reel

Wrong match.25 lb for surf fishing with light weight sinkers just won't work.You will be casting it out like a wuss because the line is too heavy for your weight.The reel is general for boating,since you are a space cadet try the spinning.Too much for you.Don't waste it.

Hi! I want to buy a conventional reel for surf fishing with a 12' rod medium heavy. What reel do you suggest?

Penn reels are superior conventional reels. But if you are surf fishing off the beach, wouldn't you prefer a spinning reel?

Sturdy and dependable reel and 10' + rod.

woah dont spend that much money. i have 6 or 7 surf rods that i use for different applications some for sharks other for smaller fish and some for catfish and not the fist one was no more than 50 dollars. i got my rod and reels from the local walley world. they are sold as a combo. and i have a couple that i got from bass pro. the ones that i have from walmart is shakespear brand and the ones from bass pro are Diawa. all are great rod and reel combos. they all come spooled with 20 lb mono line but i dont like that line for surf or cats so i strip that off and spool up some braided spiderwire. all depending on the size of size of fish you are after depends on the size of line. for surf fishing i would recomend atleat a 50 lb line. for the reason that you dont really know exactly what you will hook up to. i have been after whitting before and caught nothing but sharks and stingrays. glad i had that line on there. i have 40 lb 50 lb and 60 lb line on my reels. there is a little saying that i go buy when it comes to bying fishin gear and pretty much anything that money is spent on

you dont have to spend a pile of money for quality. just remember that even though the reels are made for saltwater, it is always good to take your reel to the water hose and spray it down for a few seconds and then take a can of wd40 and spray it down. the wd 40 helps get out any salt left. i hope this helps you out a bit good luck good fishin be safe and remember to share the experience

I'm looking for a new long casting reel for surf fishing and throwing drum rigs off piers.

For heaving drum rigs the Penn Squidder 250. For long casting with plugs, buck tails and other artificial baits in the surf, one can never go wrong with the Penn 525 Mag and the Shimano Calcutta 400S or 400BSV. I have changed the bearings in the Calcuttas, with Abec 7 bearings. The smoothness and distance of my casts, have greatly improved., with the change. I use 17 to 20 lbs. test mono. Heavier lines tend to dampen the cast.
With the Penn 250 I use heavy action 11ft. rod. The Penn 525 is matched with an 11ft. rod custom made from a British made Conoflex blank (really good for long distance casting). The Calcuttas are matched with heavy action 8ft. Lamiglas baitcasters, good when fishing with bucktails and rubber worms and when walking the dog.

I use a 7ft xhvy and 9'6" hvy or 12ft ugly stiks use reels in the size of penn 8500,Okuma 90,Mitchell 7500 spooled with 40 to 80 lb braid and then a 3 to 6 foot wire or cable leader.This all depends on the size of shark you are after so good luck!

Im going this january to do some surf & pier fishing in Myrtle Beach SC anyone had much experience with the rod n reel??

the rods are cheap. i used a 9' rod and it said 1-3oz and it snapped in half with a 2oz weight.
use a ugly stik. they are a lot stronger and they are made better. the reels have no problem but i prefer the offshore angler gold cup GC70B
