Fish Scales

Answers

Do fish scales grow back if they lose them?

We have a 5 1/2 year old goldfish that lost a few scales when he got stuck between the fish tank and the filter tube. He has a little red spot where the scales came off.

Yes, with time unless the damage is so great that it will just leave a scar. No, fish cannot live without their scales, it's like their skin! Goldfish are a coldwater fish, they heal a little faster as well.

Buy some Melafix to put in the tank (it comes in a blue bottle and can be found at petstores everywhere) and this will help speed up the process of your fish being healed. Unfortunatly, if he's not healed within a few weeks time, your fish will likely to go to god because his slime coat has been torn away and he will be suspectable to bacterial and viral infections, so act fast, and keep the water clean..

Why is my fish losing scales?

He has been losing many fish scales lately. He is a gold fish and I feed him two sinking pellets a day and he is 1-2 years old.

it could be many reasons

1) injury
2) fighting
3) stress
4) disease that causes bloating

when was the last time you did a water change? do one now, it might help. also, you can feed him a bit more.

Is lipstick really made out of fish scales?

I heard somewhere a long time ago that lipstick is made out of fish scales.

I am a makeup artist let me break it down for you:

Lipstick is a cosmetic product for the lips that is richer in color and texture than lip gloss, primarily used to apply color to the lips. Most lipsticks are red or reddish, simulating the appearance of sexual arousal, which naturally increases blood flow and reddens the lips, intending to make the wearer more sexually attractive. With modern pigments, however, lipstick is available in numerous colors and shades.

A typical lipstick contains many chemical ingredients, principally pigments, oils, waxes, and emollients. Perfume and/or flavoring may be added to cover the odors and tastes of the other ingredients.

i have heard that one of the contents of lipstick is fish scales. is it true?

does any one know what exactly the contents of lipstick are?? does it really has fish scales. if yes, am i allowed to enter temple using lipstick. i am an indian . i am used to wearing lipstick everyday. i cant do without it. since i saw in national geographic channel about the contents of lipstick i feel guilty to go to temple. please help. only serious answers please.thanks every one in advance.

All lipsticks are not the same. You have so many brands, manufacturers, and ingredients pertaining to lipstick.

I want to start off by saying don't worry! The fish scales used in lipstick CAN NOT harm you or your health. The fish scales are cleaned in the process. No makeup companies really do this anymore, and if you get a popular brand, Like Covergirl or Rimmel.. I promise you won't have fish scales in your makeup! Just make sure you check the ingredients.

This bit down here v is from http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/2544/does-lipstick-contain-fish-scales

The ingredient under discussion is called pearl essence. (Some sources give this as "pearlescence.") It's the silvery stuff found in fish scales that's used in some lipsticks, nail polishes, ceramic glazes, etc., to make them shimmery. Pearl essence is obtained primarily from herring and is one of many by-products of large-scale commercial fish processing. Synthetic versions have been developed, but to what extent they've supplanted the natural variety I hesitate to say.

And like the answerer above me said, fish scales in lipstick aren't a health concern.

LEAD IS!

Lead is in so many lipsticks, even some MAC lipsticks! They cause neurological (brain damage).

Like I said, make sure you know who manufactures your makeup.

And remember... you are safe!

And if you want to know brands that are fish-scale free, check out Aveda and other vegan/environmentally concerned brands. Here is a website that tells you some. I guarantee no fish-scales here!

Why do some fish have scales and others not?

Why do dome fish have scales and others skin? I know scales are a requirement for kosher fish...but what good do scales do? Why do sharks have skin instead of scales?

It all goes back to evolution. Some fish do not require scales like sharks. Most of it boils down to where the fish lives salt or fresh, rocks or sand and how many other fish there are that will have him for lunch. That isn't always true however.

The skin of many fish is covered with scales that protect a fish like roof shingles protect a house. You could also compare the covering of scales to a suit of armor.

A fish only develops scales during its first year of life. As fish grow, their scales get bigger. Fish growth, and scale growth, slows in the winter and speeds up in the summer. The alternating periods of growth form rings on a scale just as they do in tree trunks. It's possible to examine these rings under a magnifying lens to see how old a fish is.

All fish have body slime. The species with less well developed scales or no scales at all tend to have more slime. The slime reduces drag to help a fish move faster in the water. It also provides protection against parasites, covers wounds and helps a fish maintain the proper balance of salt in its body.

Since sharks do not have many natural preaditors, they don't need a suit of armor. (most of the time they lull around at appx. 1.5 mph looking for injured fish and are opportunistic feeders) Cat fish due to their spine also do not need to have a suit of armor. Some smooth skinned puffers have an alternate means of defense, they blow up.

Sharks certainely do not use their tails covered in skin to taste so why would his body be covered entirely in these dermal denticles? They rely on their sense of smell like catfish which are the best at smelling in the water. A cat fish can detect food in as little as 1 ppm. A keen sense of smell helps sharks find food. Through touch, hearing, and sight, they detect movement in the water. A special organ on the snouts of sharks, called the ampullae of Lorenzini, allows them to detect weak electrical voltages from living creatures or ocean currents. they do not tast with this gland or their skin.

Why do I need to clean the fish scales on a fish before I eat it?

Well, I was wondering, why do I need to clean a fish and the fish scales before I eat the fish? I eat fish withought cleaning it and it still taste the same.

it tastes the same, but most people don't like eating scales and they can fall off and get on the meat after cooking.
it's the same reason they remove hair or feathers from things we eat, they have no nutritional value and they're annoying to bite into

Swimming spinosaurs?

Sorry it's not in color, but I just finally got it scanned! A Suchomimus catching a young plesiosaur.

A few years ago I was asked what I thought of the swimming Spinosaurus idea (I was told this was put forth by Robert Bakker but I've only heard it mentioned a few times so I have no idea.) At the time I said I found it unlikely, at least for Spinosaurus, the sail would be a hinderence in the water, waves would topple it, the local crocs would eat it for lunch as they were far more adapted to the water, yadda, yadda, yadda. I didn't really look into it, I knew spinosaurs seemed to found close to water, and that they would eat fish (fish scales found in the stomach area of Baryonyx) but that's all I had read about swimming spinosaurs... until a few months ago.

Other than the scene in JP3 most of the spinosaur pictures show them wadding out into ankle deep water looking for fish, like some giant egret or stork. Since spinosaurs are so poorly known and fragmentary it's very difficult to get an idea about what they might have been doing, why did they get to big? Spinosaurs has been said to be 65 feet long dwarfing every other theropod, that's at least 17 feet longer than the next largest theropod (this is highly unlikely but is found all over the web. They were more likely similarly sized to the other large theropods, perhapse a bit longer but more gracile.) Did they eat fish exclusively? A spinosaur tooth has been found embeded in a pterosaur bone, along with the fish scales in Baryonyx's stomach were the remains of an Iguanadon (so the answer to that would be no.) How did they behave? Questions upon questions that we'll most likely never be able to fully answer.
