They are two very different methods for catching bait and as "shop" has already mentioned, your choice depends on how much time you have available to catch bait. The minnow trap will work best if it is baited and left to draw the fish in overnight, whereas the umbrella net needs more attention to be effective. I use a fine mesh cast net on the boat and a fine mesh seine net when dragging the beach areas for bait. The main reason that I catch my own bait is I like to know what the predominate baitfish is in the area and when you fish as often as I do, you save a lot of $$$ on bait. A good fine-mesh cast net or seine will help you get bait quickly and last for years. You can find these nets at all the better sporting goods stores. Tight lines!

Get some bread crumbs and drop them over your submerged net. When the minnows swim up above your net lift up and you should have them. Good luck fishin'!
Can you use a cast net to catch minnows?
Yes you can catch minnows. But be aware that you cannot keep small fingerling game fish that are caught with the rest of the minnows in the cast net. I throw a 6 ft cast net, opens to a 12ft circumference.
My husband's birthday is coming up and he loves to fish off the Carolina coast. I would like to get him a nice cast net and I understand that Calusa is the best brand. Now, I have to choose a size. He will be using it to catch bait (typically minnows). And the water is pretty shallow. What does 1/4" mesh x 7' high mean? And does he need a slow sink or a fast sink?

Calusa is definately the best, but they are also the most expensive, as usual. You may not need to spend so much, as you will see from looking at this site. The 1/4 inch is the size of the holes in the net, which should be fine for minnows, peanut bunker, etc.. The 7 foot part is the diameter of the net when opened, the area that it will cover when thrown, so this # should be fine for you as well, especially if he is a beginner, as throwing a net takes a good amount of practice and getting used to. Heavy weighted nets, or fast sinking, are meant for deeper water, like if your throwing fom a boat or pier or something as they will sink faster. The lighter weighted nets, or slow sinking, are meant for the shallows and for throwing from the shore. Hope this helped and you sound like a great wife !!
i love to catch minnow in a creek for spring jug lines but i was looking for quicker way to catch the minnows without waiting for a trap to catch em' so i was gonna try a net plz tell me how to make one or a fast way to catch minnows thx in advance

You can also use a seine net by either dragging it by hand or pulling it behind a boat. Check local regulations BEFORE attempting this. It is legal where I live but you know the laws vary from region to region.
