How do I treat a bag worm infestation on my evergreen shrubs?

I have an arborvitiae and two well established cedar shrubs that are covered with bag worms and the foliage is starting to turn brown. I live in Iowa. What's the best treatment? Will my shrubs die?

My son is a professional nurseryman and he says if they are smaller, perhaps an inch or less, spray with Bt, [Bacillus thurgiensis]. Your local nursery should know about this and have it. If they are larger and you don't perceive a worm in the bag, hand pick them off.
They are in effect strangling the branches and you may eventually have to trim off some dead branches.

Bag worm and my ornamental evergreen?

Last year I had a TERRIBLE Bag WORM infestation on one of my large ornamental evergreens. It pretty much defoliated the whole darn thin before I Malathioned them and killed them. The branches are still pretty supply (not dried out). I was wondering what the prognosis for this tree might be?? It is now late March and I have not seen any new green appearing yet, but I am uncertain when evergreen shrubs/trees in N. Texas might start normally filling out...

Thanks!

just watch it for a while and if it doesnt want to sprng back by say the end of july then you have a lost cause. But you still have time to replant something new and gets its root system ready for winter.

How to get rid of bag worms in trees?

The trees in my backyard are infected with bag worms. Can anyone tell me how to get rid of them?

While burining works it is not the best method over all because the worms will return again and again. It can also be dangerous if you choose not to cut the branches to be burned because you can set the whole tree on fire. If you use that method please be sure to have the garden hose handy.

I would also use another method to make sure you will not have eggs laid and then have the same problem next season.

Use BT. You spray this on your plants and when the critters eat it their insides will disolve from ingestion of the BT. They eat it when consuming leaves in their larval stage, therefore, they never make it to the adult moth stage when they would lay eggs and start the process again.

You can use other insecticides. The following are labeled for such use: acephate (Orthene), bendiocarb (Ficam, Turcam), bifenthrin (Talstar), carbaryl (Sevin), chlorpyrifos (Dursban), cyfluthrin (Tempo), diazinon, dimethoate (Cygon), fluvalinate (Mavrik), malathion, nicotine sulfate, pyrethrum, permethrin (Pounce), rotenone and trichlorfon (Dylox, Proxol). Please note that several of these are restricted use pesticides and you may or may not be able to use them where you live.

You may also hand pick the creatures and either squish or dispose of them in a can of water. Not a fun job by any means but it does work.

how to get rid of bag worms?

my pine tree is loaded with bag worms. how can i get rid of them and will it be to late?

Manually removing bagworm bags and destroying them is an effective control for light infestations. For heavier infestations you can consider spraying an organic pesticide like Bacillius thuringiensis var. kurstaki, a naturally occurring bacteria (DiPel), insecticidal soap, pyrethrin, or spinosad. If you are looking for a conventional pesticide, try sevin or malathion, though these can kill beneficial insects as well. Any spray works best when larvae are young. Inspect 2 weeks after first spray application and reapply if necessary.

What eats a bag worm?

What animal eats a bag worm????

They are parasitized by ichneumon wasps. Some birds and insects eat them as well.

Worm, Bag, Sleep, Music

A small cat worries a worm on the wet pavement outside the house.

That was a few days ago. Now a polythene bag (does anyone say 'polythene' any more?) which I make a mental note to remove tomorrow before the couple arrive to view the house. First viewing. L wants to tidy all clutter away. I clean the bathroom, straighten the throw on the sofa. Should we brew coffee, buy fresh flowers? Throw garlands round their necks with cries of 'welcome! You are the first to view our home!'

Having watched a programme on telly (well, i-Player) called '10 things you need to know about sleep' I have decided my new strategy is to stay up later and worry less about how much sleep I'm getting. It's never helped anyway. Longer evenings. Woh! Not finding the job so devastatingly tiring any more so this may actually work... Not that I imagine I'll ever become an owl.

A slight answer to the meme Lucy tagged me with:
I am listening to 'Brazilian Groove' - a Putamayo collection bought by L for 50p from Todmorden library which seemed to be rather rashly selling off half its book and CD stock. I dance to it too. Also listening to Eddi Reader's new CD 'Love is the Way'. My friend K came up from London for the weekend and we went to see Eddi at the Victoria Theatre in Halifax. She was wonderful. She is Scottish and fiftyish, with a strong jaw and glorious voice and writes a lovely tune. Musicians included accordian, pipe and fiddle player as well as drums, double bass and several guitars - oh and ukelele. She sings about the ephemeralness of life, about love and about letting go of teenage children. Bob Dylan's latest offering 'Together Through Life' has also gone down well. Increasingly gravel-voiced he now features accordian in his band too... And on the way up to Widdop to eat an enormous amount of food on Sunday, and, as it turned out, hurl a glass of red wine all over K, Tom Waits' 'Real Gone' was sounding pretty fine (speaking of gravel)...
