Ice Fishing Line

Making Line Stay on a Ice Fishing Tip Up?

I have been ice fishing for many years but never really used a tip up. I decided to try some this year and when i get the line on it and the liter and hook i cant get it to stay put. The line just keeps coming off. Any suggestion on preventing this.

Hopefully your using a Dacron line?

Mono/Braid won't stay on the spool.

This is how it should be rigged:

Dacron line to barrel swivel then a 3FT leader of Braided or Mono ice line.

Hope this helps? Good luck!

had anyone ever tried a trot line for ice fishing trout?

In my experience you need to be close or they get off, so I doubt it would work well. But yer thinkin anyway, keep doing that.

Non-Stretch line for ice fishing, will it cut my hands?

I bought some 8lb test non stretch braided, cold weather line, that says it's the diameter of 1lb test. I was going to use it for lake trout, but I rarely use a jigging rod, rather a stick that lets the line run freely down the hole. I pull the fish in with my hands on the line. I've heard mixed opinions about this.

Does anyone know if this stuff will cut my hands, lake trout could potentially be 20+ lbs, but probably 5-10lbs?

Also, does anyone have any opinions on the effectiveness of no stretch line for this application?

I know nothing about ice fishing, but i do use braided line & unless you are wearin gloves when pulling in a larger fish, it can & will produce a nice cut on your hand/hands &/or fingers.
be careful handleing the line, with a fish or hang up on the hook end

what is best sensitive light line for ice fishing now? i fish ul with micro jigs for eyes alot...fireline? ?

i want ul as possible...is there drawbacks to the near zero stretch of firelines for shallow water...what is my beswt choice? also tip up line...ive got cheap underwater tip ups..i use for eyes..what is my best choice?..after all i handline them in right?..but i want light enought they dont drop the bait..alot lighter than some of that rope like stuff...thanks for your help!

I use fire line both summer and winter. I don't use tip ups though. I would be careful using fireline as it can cut your hand easily.

Ice fishing. What's the convention?Should my buddy dip his line into my ice hole or should I rip him a new one?

And should I hold his rod while he's boring the new ice hole?
Winter's coming and I want to be prepared.

`
Zalem...so you want me to die now?

He can dip, sure. You should take turns or else you'll get your rods banging into each other. And hold his rod, if only for something to do while he's drilling the ice hole. That way you might still get a nibble on the end while he's ripping the new one.

If you go ice fishing and tie a thermometer to the end of your line, and sink it all the way to the bottom....

What is the temperature reading (C)?
Hint: At what temperature is water the most dense?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_(molecule)
.

At 4°C, just above freezing, water reaches its maximum density, and as water cools further toward its freezing point, the liquid water, under standard conditions, expands to become less dense.

ADDED: This would of course all change if you're ice fishing on a pond of Heavy Water. (LOL) Go to this link. --
