Since it seems that you will be new to trot lining,here is what you need to do. Buy you a trot line that is already made up of main line, staging, and hooks - it will come in a pack with 25 hooks to a pack, These can be purchased at your local wal- mart or tackle shop, The main line holds the staging and the staging holds the hooks-The staging is just a smaller diameter line then the main line. Go to lake or body of water that should hold catfish- find two trees, or stumps, or bushes or anything to tie the line off on and connect it to the other end- since the hooks are about 4 feet apart the line should be about 90 feet long- tie off the line on each ends- on the middle of the trot line tie a line that is about one foot longer then the staging is - tie a weight on the end of this line- that way the trot line is one foot off the bottom in the middle when the weight is on the bottom- you may have to adjust the tension on one end of the line so that the weight in the middle is on the bottom- this will keep boats from running over your line and cutting it. and since catfish are mainly bottom feeders, it is the best way to set your line- as you were tying off the trot line, you noticed that the hooks were not attached yet. You need to place the hooks on the line last- The staging is a double line that you run through the eye of the hook and then put the hook through the loop. Bait the line with cut shad, worms, cooked ivory soap, baby crawfish, aged cheese, liver, stink baits etc. The best is cut shad or baby crawfish. You will be able to catch more then you can eat, with one or two of these trot lines. Good luck and good fishing!

how to rig a trout line for big texas catfish?
my brother and i are running a trout line in texas for big catfish .but all we get are twisted up leads and no bait...
I would tie a hook # 4/0 about every 3 feet. It is what you tie the end to that is important. a tree won't give and might break the line. maybe a good stout limb will work better. it will bend when they pull and not put a lot of tension on the line. as for bait, that depends on the catfish. some species don't like dead or prepared baits . some preferr live bluegills and ect.

I'm going fishing for trout in a pond later this week and i was wondering what to put on my line, like how should i rig it?
Its a pond so what do i do? Can I only fly fish?
I have a ton of fishing gear, i just dont know what type of things to bring with me fishing. Please help!

use a trout line and catch bluegill???
im thinking you mean a trot line, the long piece of line that has strings with hooks coming off thats usually used for catfish. sure you can! just downsize from catfish hooks and use a half size worm so the smaller bluegill will stay away. hey, you may even catch an eating size catfish or two!

what fishing line is best to use when fishing for fresh water trout in WV in April?
Going April 11, 12th, and 13th, never been trout fishing before. Using a 5:1:1 ratio Shimano real and a 6 ft rod...Taking two seperate poles, a light and heavy outfit if needed. Not sure of the line to use. Thanks.

Why IS A Trout Line Called A Trout Line?
I Have Aways Wondered Why A Trout Line Was Called A Trout Line Because It Don't Only Catch Trout
You are thinking of a "trotline". I dont know why it sounds so much like something that would catch trout but it does. Usually people (including myself) use these to catch catfish. They are actually illegal in some of the northern states. Good Fishing!!!
I feel like I need to share a little train of thought that just went through my mind.

Now, I always have a notebook sitting at my left hand ready to write, it’s an old habit. Anymore its main purpose in life if for me to doodle, and write random thoughts, and when I am thinking and writing I tend to write a letter, and then trace over several times. Well I was going to write the question “Can you run a trout line”. I wrote the C, and went over it and over it and over it for a little while, then moved over to the a and made the loop for the a, and over that a few times, when to make the hook on the a and found that somehow I had added a slash to the C, making it a G, had not added the hook to the a yet, so I had an o. So it seemed plane enough to me that when you have a Go you don’t mess it up, but rather just add the D like he wants you too. God…
Anyway, my realization was that through all of this, God does not desire that we let up on what we are doing to prepare for any kind of disaster that may occur, but at the same time he remain our primary focus.
Yes, I can run a trout line, and today as I think about that and other things, I must also weigh the idea of Gods hand in all of this.
