I live in Washington and need to pick up a casting rod for steelhead this winter. I bought a nice Shimano Tekota reel, the 500LC. I'll be using it out on my drift boat mainly.
Stick with All Star, Fenwick or G-Loomis like this 9'9" heavy action with a long handle for extra leverage and balance. Since you are fishing from a boat, you might even consider a 10'6" model good for 2-8 oz baits and 10-40 lb test.

I am not fond of baitcasting reels but I love my 9 foot rod.
You can use it, but the guides are too small to make it work as well as it would with a proper spinning rod.
Spinning rods are designed to have progressively larger eyes on the guides as you go from tip to handle. The larger "stripper" guide (the one closest to the handle/grip) is necessary because spinning reels release line in a round coil. This coil, if restricted, will come off the spool slower, causing shorter casting ability. The larger eye on that first guide lets line off naturally at first, and then the progressively smaller guides tighten the coil gradually allowing the line to flow from the tip guide smoothly and uncoiled.
Casting rods have almost no progression in guide eye size. The reason being that line from a casting reel comes off straight, not coiled. Therefore, there is no restriction caused by the line, and the line will flow straight from the reel through the tip guide.
Casting reels mount on the "top" of the casting rod.
Spinning reels mount on the "bottom" of the spinning reel.
Both types can be made with the same materials (fiberglass, graphite, composite...etc), handle composition (EVA foam, cork, graphite), and guide materials (ceramic, steel, titainium...etc).
so i got these new crank baits but they are to light for my bait caster and i'm thinking about getting a spin casting outfit should i get one will it be able to get the lure out farther i have a spin casting rod and reel but its old and cheap i too it out a week ago and i suck at casting
should i get the rod and reel ultra light, light medium etc.

I would like a cheap casting rod and reel combo. I really like the Cabela's® Prodigy Casting Reel, but it is just a little expensive. If I could find that reel for about $50, then I would get the reel and a rod. But does anyone know a good saltwater casting combo? I am looking to spend $20-$65. I am an Inshore fishermen. Little redfish, snook, trout, ETC?

Your mention of Cabela's Prodigy Combo, sparked me ta' respond. I purchased two of them, got one for myself and was so impressed, that I did the same for the Grandson. However, they be both for Freshwater (spinning rig). Great combo's ;)!! May want ta' think about roundin' up some extra monies and go with it ie., bait castin' ;) ;). I made this purchase bout' 3 years ago and their still, "cuttin' the mustard", in fact outta' the "ump teen" (a LOT), of rods and reels that I own, it be my first choice when I head out :) :) !! Don't know if your aware ~ the reel is made by Dawia. Buttttt, if finances are still limited, am quite, quite sure some of the knowledgeable Answers ppl will be there ta' help you out in findin' a good rig. hello i am trying to find a rod that is good for casting light lines (such as soft plastics, tazzie devils, lures) I need a light rod that will be able to cast a lure max distance. I will prob b using it at lakes for trout and redfin and off piers for salmon. I would also like 2 b able to use it wen ive got sinkers on my line? any suggestions?
If you are only going to use one rod, go for a medium weight spinning rod and reel. They're versatile and can handle almost any lure.
