I have an Apache crappie pole -- is it possible to add a reel bought from a store to it instead of pulling the line out of the water yourself? Just wondering. If I can do this, what's the best and cheapest reel I can use for this (a little or medium sized one are fine)?
sure you can. crappie poles, some are built with reel seats as some are not but if your don't have one you can make your own. first go buy a reel then when you have chosen one set it in place were you want it, then add some garila glue to the bottom of the reel , then use electrict tape and tape the reel to the pole then wait for it to dry. what i have found that sportman warehouse sell cheap reels, i dont mean chep brand. they sell good reels for cheap go buy the diwa ABS one, I got that one for $10 and it work real good.
good luck and happy fishin
I am in need of a new pole, but I don't know what kind to get. I prefer to fish for crapie, but sometime bass as well. I either fish off the bank or on the water. Any help is appreciated.
You CAN use a single rod for both. I have in the past. Get a Medium to Meduim Light action rod, 6'6". Put 8 pound test line and you can catch both species. If you catch a bass, be sure to play it in though or the line will break.
It is better to have a seperate rod for each fish, but not necessary.
The key though: BUY ANY ROD EXCEPT THE LOUSY PIECE OF CRAP UGLY STICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Those are the fish that the lake I'm living on is stocked with. I have never fished before but when I can walk 15 feet from the RV to the water I feel like I should take advantage of it, I just don't know where to start.
Ugly Stik makes a rod capable of catching all that you wish to catch.
Try to find one called the Ugly Stik Lite series, ($39). They are more "sensitive", have a nice cork handle & have the same durability of the original Ugly Stik's. A 6'6" model would be sufficient.
The Mitchell Avocet reel is one option but http://www.cabelas.com has Mitchell 300 Xe on sale for $25. The 300 Series by Mitchell is a decent entry level spinning reel that surpasses the Avocet.
This spinning outfit (Ugly Stik Lite $39 & Mitchell 300 Reel $25) is a good introductory, entry level combo that can catch 15LB Catfish and the smallest Bluegill.
It is not the finest outfit, nor the worse. And if your budget allows, you could spend far more. However, because you have no idea whether you shall like fishing I think you will find this combo would be a good match for you.
Hope this helps ya? Good fishing!
PS- A good line to fish Catfish to Bass would be either a 10-12LB Mono line (like Berkley Trilene XT) or a braided line like Berkley Fireline 4/10 "smoke color". Braided lines are extremely strong, supple, and have a very thin diameter. If you use a braid you must also use a Mono leader.
Flurocarbon line is almost invisible in water and works very well as a leader.

you don't need a special reel or line
where i live ( south central Florida, on Lake Okeechobee ) , the majority of the people fishing for CRAPPIE, don't use a reel on their pole, they just attach the line, to the tip of the pole
I seen one and it didnt have any eyes and it doesnt have a spot for a reel. Can you reccomend a good length?
just tie the line around the tip, hold it out,set the dobber, watch for the bite, lift fish in.look around they make those 11 footers with guides and a small reel seat for ultra light action.tons of fun for all pan fish.cane fishing is what you would be doing with the other rod .although a somewhat interesting method it is rarely used now adays.some of those stlye cane poles are also modeled to run the line through the pole itself thats why no guides show.that may be the style you are looking at.same principle.its called cane fishing
I'm looking at buying the best fishing pole I can get for sensitivity someone told me to buy graphite but I'm not sure what the rating means in relationship to the pole is a higher rating better should I buy a one piece pole or a two piece I'm looking for the most sensitive pole I can get I'm a crappie fisherman so I'll be using a light action pole.
the higher the modulus of graphite, the higher the stiffness to weight ratio will be (i.e. lighter and stiffer). a 57 million modulus graphite rod will be lighter and stiffer (therefore more brittle) than a rod rated at 44 million modulus.
IM 6 graphite is approx. 33 million modulus
IM7 graphite is approx. 44 million modulus
IM8 graphite is approx. 51 million modulus
the higher the modulus, the more expensive the rod will be.
IM 7 graphite offers a nice compromise being light, sensitive
and not overly expensive for the type of fishing (crappie)
you do.
