How do I use a spinning rod?

Spinning/Spincasting rod. Whena nd what position do I place the bail in? When do I place my finger on the line in the process?

A large number of special lures have been developed for spinning. They resemble bait-casting lures such as plugs, spinners, and spoons, but they are smaller and lighter. A hollow plastic bubble filled with a desired amount of water for weight may be used with spinning tackle. It is affixed to the line 2 to 3 feet ahead of the lure and enables the spin-fisherman to cast the lightest and tiniest artificial flies.

Spin casting differs from bait casting in the manipulation of the reel and line. To cast, the line is picked up by the tip of the index finger of the hand holding the rod. The bail, or pick-up finger, on the reel is put in casting position, so that the line is free to run off the spool without interference. When the line hits the water the fisherman begins to reel in (retrieve) his line. As soon as the retrieve is started, the bail automatically snaps into pick-up position to wind the line on the spool. Spinning reels, like surfcasting reels, permit a fish to run with the line while the angler is reeling in.

One advantage of spinning over bait casting is that the rod is held in position with the guides downward and the reel underneath. Thus a fisherman does not have to change hands to reel in his line, as the reel handle is in proper position. Spinning reels are available for both right- and left-handed casters

Can you fish bass with a spinning rod?

Can you fish bass with a spinning rod? What is the average weight of a bass? Can you catch speckled trout with a small top water frog?
Also what do you think is the best all round fishing rod? What do you thik about a spinning rod, baitcasting rod, and a spincasting rod?

yes. l've gotten them up to 8lb on spin tackle though my preference is baitcasting gear. l don't use spincast.
topwater frog
speckled trout = brook trout, no.
speckled trout = spotted weakfish, no.

baitcast l use 90% or more of the time. spinning, the rest. both have their place and good qualities.

What kind of spinning rod do you recommend?

I live in mid Michigan and I like to fish anything from walleye, bass, pike, to catfish, and salmon but I am debating whether to get a medium rod or medium heavy. It's either between St.Croix, Berkley or Gander Mtn.

Use the money you planned to spend on the St. Croix and get yourself 3 or 4 different rods.

What is the best spinning rod reel combo for under $100.00?

I would like to know what would be a quality spinning rod and reel combo for under $100.00 US
I plan to fish for anything from Pan Fish to Muskie so it has to be a universal spinning combo

What kinda fishing are you planning on doing ?

UPDATE:

You might be able to have a universal combo for Crappie/light tackle Bass/Northern, but not one designed for Bluegill to Musky.

The problem- Musky lures are "heavy". Musky rods are "heavy-action" broom-handles.
Musky combo's usually use heavy-action reels like Abu-Garcia 6500.

You wouldn't want to go Crappie-fishing with a Musky-combo. It would be tough to even cast a Crappie jig with a Musky-combo. And no fun!

Here's my 2 cents:

You should get the Pflueger President/Tourney Trail IM7 combo at Cabelas. The 6740 Model($89.94)

Or if you want something a bit "nicer" try the:

Daiwa, Exceler /Tourney Trail IM7 combo, model EXC3000, ($99.94)

Both are at www.cabelas.com

Hope this helps ya? Good luck!

I need to know how to rig a spinning rod( and fly rod) for salt water?

mostly inshore like snook reds cobia and trout , ie do i need a leader on my spinning rod, what kind and how to rig. Also I have a 8 wt fly rod, what leader and tippet should i use. Any sugestions on flys would help too!

AIRFLOW pretty much answered the Q.

Here's my 2 cents.

For Spinning- For inshore-saltwater Reds, Trout & Snook 12-14LB Mono or Flurocarbon (Berkely "Vanish") works fine. I personally like to use 4LB/20 "Power Pro" Braided line with a leader of "Vanish" Flurocarbon.

Powerpro advantage? Distance in casting and quicker "sinking". Plus it's nigh' impossible to "cut", (Important to use a leader with Braids!). A leader of 12-17 LB line works well with a small black swivel.

Use a 1/4-1/2 OZ Jighead & live Shrimp or Mud-minnow for Reds ,Trout, Snook, Flounder, Weakfish, Drum & Sheephead.

For artificial- Berkley "Gulp" products are excellent , as well as, Yozuri Crystal Minnows & wide wobble Spoons in gold.

Cobia are generally "offshore critters". However, you might see one nearshore down South, (Boca-Keys).You would need a "boatrod" (spinning or conventional) and either 25-40 LB Mono or 20LB/40 Braided line, (depending on the size). They love eels and small bluecrab rigged to larger Jigheads. They are very "visual" and in "clear water" will sometimes "snub" any riggs that don't look "kosher".

I tend to make my own leaders for saltwater flyfishing. Because you get "snagged" frequently and "cut-off" by "toothy" saltwater critters it can be expensive to go buy a bunch of leaders, (on a bad day you will have to retie flys & leaders numerous times!).

A good idea is to buy some 10 LB Vanish, 12 LB Mono, and 14 LB Mono. Attach these together in 3 ft segments with a Bloodknot ,(or similiar knot), and VIOLA! Here's Johnny!
Make up 5 or 6 for a trip and your set.

Clousers in green/white, white, white/red, white/mylar strip, are excellent flys to fish with. You should also have a couple "critter flys" like a Umpquas "Andersons McCrab" and some Seaducers, Bendbacks & Cochroaches.

Make sure to wear "bootys" if you intend to wade in the Keys/Down South.

Hope this helps? Good luck!

Important Guide About Fishing Rods

Modern fishing rods have incorporated modern features that have not been a part of old fashioned cane poles Modern fishing rods are equipped with reels which aid in pulling in of fish caught in its bait. A much-sophisticated feature is the new spinning rod with which the shaft of the rod except the handle is capable of moving on it's axis to allow flexibility with fish that are caught with snare bait causing it to struggle. Not unlike the old cane poles the rod today has a thick handle and gets thinner at the top

This very basic design [allows handling stability] and flexible movement for the whole length of the shaft. In most cases, a rod will measure anywhere from two to five meters (2 to 5 m) and have various ranges in capability to handle strain in fishing activity. The length is important in the pole's capability with being able to handle the force that the fish put on to the pole and makes the determination which the caliber of performance of the rod.

Cane poles are of the smaller and less sophisticated gadgets in fishing. Normally, it is constructed with bamboo or a very flexible wood with a basic fly line attached to it. Very unlike the other modern rods cane poles do not usually contain reels or have a similar setup to be used for reeling in fish captured on your hook. This action is called angling

A popular type of rod now is called a spinning rod and can be used either for heavyweight or lightweight fish although they were proven best for trout, walleye and bass fish. Their measurements differ from 5 to 7 feet (1.5 to 2.5 m). For the most part, spinning poles are used in bass competitions because of their flexibility and high stress tolerance. They accommodate bigger and better lines and stabilize them to avoid tangling as the line uncoils.

Jigging rods are good for heavy lures and baits when you get to around 180 to 200 feet below the surface. They are made of fine, heavy materials that explain their weight. Use of jigging rods is very much due on the alternating currents during the fishing activity. Many oceans will have an unpredictable current and that's why the bait and fly lines must be kept in their proper place. Fishing lures can also be disturbed and cause confusion among fish if lines fail to be long or heavy enough to hold out against and handle water currents under the sea. Such rods are good for catching fish that are found to be living at the bottom of the ocean, and prime examples of these are cod and halibut.
