A trolling rod isn't built for casting. In the ocean they tend to be short and stiff, with rollers instead of standard guides. A shorter, stiffer rod gives better leverage when pulling on a big fish, the rollers mean there's less wear on the line.

You can troll with a standard rod -- as long as it's matched to the right size reel and line for the fish you're after, it'll work okay.

Don't think either one or the other would make a difference (I prefer the Quick Draw). Just remember, them Crappie have got real soft mouths aka "paper mouths" and ya' don't want ta' work them ~ say like with a, "hawg" bass;)...

Try ebay as a start then check Cabelas, Bass Pro and maybe Gander Mountian. I hope this helps.

Baitcast or spinning, lb test line - braided or not, - what gear ratios or minimum strength needed in a reel do I need to handle the weight?

me personally...id go with...

A large abu garcia baitcasting reel spooled with 80 lb test power pro (i think its 20 lb diameter). Abu garcias will do the trick. Ive been fishing muskies with em for years.

st. croix rod...st croix makes signature musky rods specially designed for muskies and theyre pretty high quality.

I have a very old rod reel combo, made of hard wood and leather the reel is about 10 in. around it has wire running down the middle and a roller on the end. any info on this would be helpfull

On a grouper troll, which is what we use them for around here, I put mine on a stout 5' digging stock ( heavy boat rod) and use the Penn 4/0 reel. I have alos found that a braid/spyderwire line helps get the lure down a LOT quicker with less scope and float.
