Diving Lures

what pound test line and wire leader should i use if i am trolling 8-10 inch diving lures?

im going fishing in the philippines, and my friend there show me the lures to bring. i bought some 10 inch rappala lures.

Trolling for wahoo off the San Diego long range boats the standard rig is 80+ pound line and 200+ pound wire leaders. This is for trolling the 10-inch Marauder lures, generally at 8-9 knots of speed. Rapalas (like the CD-18 and 22) have less drag in the water, but I would still not recommend trolling them on less than 50 pound line, unless the boat's moving considerably slower. If you need a wire leader for the fish's teeth, it should probably be twice the strength of your line.

You need considerably heavier line for trolling to stand up to the impact of the initial strike, even though you might have no problem landing the same size fish from a non-moving boat on considerably lighter line.

Of course, if you're looking at getting bigger fish (over 100 pounds), 50-pound test might not be enough.

You might check with your friend about tackle specifics, or the species you'll be targeting.

out of these, which fishing lures are the best for bass?

ok, i have diving lures, fake frogs, spinner bait, popper, jitterbugs, and topwater lures. which ones are the best?

When I did Bass (still fish smally's but not Black Bass anymore ~ got to d _ _ n commercialized for my likin'), a Spinner-Bait (always had a fetish for the color combo Chartreuse & White skirt ;)) with a "trailer" (link), produced a' lot of em'. For Smally's I use either Panther Martin in-line spinners and the good ol' Rapala Original Floater (can be worked as a' shallow runner and topwater/floater as well). Don't know if you'd be fishin' a Lake (both species) or river (smallmouth) but, water conditions, weather, etc., are goin' to have a great bearing on the type to use. All of the ones you've listed work well ~ just have ta' find out which one their wantin' ;) ;)... Good luck and "Fish On" ;)... < ' ( (( > <

What is the best way to catch bass in these two locations?

1) A pond that is 1'-4' deep it is only about 1 or 2 acres. I have tried almost all lures and worms and have only caught one bass with a Top-Diving lure that is silver with a light blue on it's top and part of it's head. I have tried shiners but once again no luck, and I know that there are bass in there.

2) A 2,534 acre lake, once again I have tried almost everything and I have caught only one bass with a dead shiner that I was reeling in, the bass came and took it. The fishing areas(That are on land, I don't have a boat) range from being 5'-(around) 8'.

Extra Info) Both bass where about 3 or 4 lbs and where 12-14" in length (I did not get exact information) And both areas are pretty weedy.

Try night fishing it with a topwater lure like a black jitterbug, or a popper like a Heddon Pop N image. Cast it out reel your slack ,let it sit for 5 to 10 seconds move it a little bit let it sit 5 seconds or so and repeat . Keep your line tight , when you hear a splash set the hook.

It sounds like your fishing for pressured bass , which means they get fished for during the day a lot . If there are bass there they will feed at night , especially any big ones , dont use a light if you can help it and definately dont shine the light on the water.

Try that on both lakes and see what happens I have had great sucess at night time but use bug spray before ya go out the skeeters can get bad.

Shiners should work great in the day ? I fish them 3 feet or so under a bobber cast them out and let them swim around (Keep them lively dont let them die in your bait bucket ). If you dont get a bite in 15 minutes in one spot with a shiner move to another . Fish them near the outside edge of weed beds or where there is deeper water near by.

What types of lures work good for surf fishing of the Maryland coast?

I would appreciate suggestions on colors, size, types (spoons, plugs, etc), top water, diving...Thanks!

I live in Maryland and have surf fished here my entire life. There are very few lures that will work if you are surf fishing. Surf fishing in this area is done 99% of the time with some type of live cut bait, shinners (minnows)cut squid, grass shrimp, sml crabs. Because of the waves and strong current spoons and jigs just don't attract the fish to bite. Here we use the live bait, bottom fish using pretty heavy lead weights
If you are fishing from a boat along the shoreline thats another story. Surgical tubing rigged with hooks in bright colors works the best for Rockfish,Sea Trout and Bluefish. Toni Asetta Spoons that are highly polished silver with a brite trailer feather also work well. Some diving plugs will work occasionally, but again...live bait rules!

Saltwater anglers, what is the deepest diving hard bait....?

That you know of? I recently took notice of the Mann's Magnum Series Tidewater Stretch lures, and was amazed that they hit depths to 50 feet trolling. Is there an even deeper diving lure out there? I'm not a saltwater angler so I have no knowledge of these things, but 50 feet! That blew me away!

I use the Stretch 30's and 50's for grouper fishing. They are the deepest diving lures that I know of. Down-riggers and planers will also help to get them down deeper without as much line. LOL, thats one of the problems with using a Stretch 50, if you have it down 50 feet, it seems like you're reeling line in for 10 minutes. The planers help, they'll get you lure down with using as much line. Also, if you use a smaller diameter braided line, instead of mono, it will slice through the water easier and get down with less line out form the reel.

Crankbait Basics

Crankbaits for Bass Fishing
The crankbait or crankbait lure, is one of the many tools used in bass fishing for catching bass off of structure. As with plastic worms which I discussed in the last post and most all bass lures, these baits come in many different styles, shapes, colors and designs for many different applications. I’ll go over each basic type here and do my best to help you understand there characteristics and the fishing situation that each is suited for.
Diving Crank Bait
The diving baits have a lip or bill fitted to the front of the lure which causes the bait to dive. The depth to which the bait will dive is controlled by the length of the lip. The longer the lip, the deeper the bait will dive. The shape and width of the lip and the lure determines the action or wobble. Some have a short or tight wobble. Others have a wide wobble action.
Deep Diving Crankbait - 8 to 20 ft depth
Medium Diving Crankbait - 4 to 8 ft depth

Shallow Diving Crankbait - 1 to 4 ft depth

Diving lures are typically used to catch fish on structure or cover located at a particular depth. For example, if bass are holding...
