Topwater Lures

How do I use topwater lures?

I am going to buy a few topwater lures, but first how do I use them?
Any advice, tips, links etc.? I will most likely purchase an interesting one like a frog, insect, or mouse. So how do I use them?

Make a cast into that great looking spot, and then as soon as the bait hits the water make that first little twitch with the bait, and after that, what usually happens is wham!!! A bass comes over and nails it. If they don't nail it the first time, wait and "pop" it some more. Popping is when you make the lure bounce on the water and splash water to cause the bass to strike. Try it over and over at different speeds to see what works best. I advise you to also try the Hula Popper, Rebel Pop-R and Rapala Skitter Pop. They're all other great top-water baits.
Hope i helped ya out.

What's the difference between the Zara Spook and the Super Spook topwater lures?

The Heddon lures website and the Bass Pro Shops website and the Cabelas websites don't explain what the differences are between all the different Spooks. I see that the length and weights are slightly different but is that all there is between a regular Spook and a Super Spook?

The Spook is a 3/4oz bait the Super Spook is 7/8oz and the Super Spook Jr is 1/2oz, the Zara Puppy is 1/4oz. Both Super Spook models have internal rattles unlike the other Spooks and the larger size has 3 trebles and stronger hardware.

do you have to use lead weights when fishing with topwater lures?

can anyone tell m how it works
how do you cast it without any weight?

obviously not. it wouldn't be much of a topwater if you did that. additional weight will ruin the action of any lure other than a plastic worm which in most cases are meant to be used with a special worm weight.
the proper combination of rod and reel will cast your topwaters with no problem. it should be of at least decent quality with a good line that is in the 10 to 15lb test range. any sort of gear such as spinning, spin-cast or a baitcasting outfit can be used with passable results although, a baitcasting outfit would be recommended by most proficient bass fishers.

Can someone describe the "walk the dog" technique for fishing topwater lures?

Keep snapping the line, bringing in the slack after each snap. You'll see the bait move side to side.

Topwater lures, walking the dog, I need help?

I have become so frustrated with trying to "walk the dog", that I briefly stopped practicing at it. I'm not really one to quit, so I'm gonna devote more time than usual this summer to really getting good at it. My question is, is there a certain rod that's more conducive when it comes to "walking the dog"? What I mean is, is there a certain rod action?, rod length?, or tip action that better serves the purpose? I have tried lots of different rods, but is there an overall "standard" type that most anglers use for this?

Do redfish and trout like low or high pitched topwater lures?

I use spook, jrs in relatively calm water with light wind and have a lot of success. For absolutely calm waters, subsurface lures like Mann's Baby minus 1, redfish magic. For high winds and rougher water, bigger topwaters--top dogs, skitterwalks, Super Spooks, also pappa dogs, the Waker. Redfish Magic, spoons pretty much anytime.
